How to cite a newspaper article or title

To cite a newspaper article

The newspaper articles available through Trove should be cited as electronic reproductions.

1. Navigate to the newspaper article you would like to cite.
2. Click on the ‘Details’ button (with an ' i ' on it) located at the top left of your screen.
3. The ‘Details’ section provides examples of commonly used citation styles, copy the citation that is most appropriate.
   The ‘Details’ section also provides the ‘Article identifier’ URL – we recommend using this URL when citing articles.

To cite a newspaper title

1. When viewing an article in the newspaper you would like to cite, hover your mouse over the newspaper’s title in the black bar above the article.
2. Click on the ‘View title info’ button that appears and a pop-up screen will display information on that title.
3. Click the URL link where it says ‘Cite this title’ – this will take you to the publication information that you can use for citations.

How to cite digitised or born-digital content

Citing digitised or born-digital content outside of our digitised newspapers zone is similar to citing newspapers, but slightly different. 

To cite digiitsed or born-digital content

1. 1. Navigate to the content item you would like to cite.
   2. Click on the ‘Cite’ button (sixth option down) located at the left of your screen.
   3. Select to cite either the entire work, or the current page you are viewing. 
   4. The ‘Cite’ section provides examples of commonly used citation styles, copy the citation that is most appropriate.
      The ‘Cite’ section also provides the ‘Work identifier’ URL – we recommend using this URL when citing. 

How to cite a book, picture, map or music

Sometimes it can be difficult to know how to cite material that has been found online and the National Library’s discovery service Trove is one such resource.

As a result we’ve created a mechanism that makes it easier and it’s just a click of a button and then copy and paste the citation of your choice.

To cite a book / picture / map / music

1. Navigate to the book record you would like to cite
2. Scroll to the ‘Edition details’ section of the record
3. Click on the ‘Cite this’ button
4. A pop up screen will be displayed with examples of commonly used citation styles, copy the citation that is most appropriate.

We recommend that you use the ‘Work Identifier’ rather than the URL as the URL is subject to change.

**All citations are automatically generated and may require some modification to conform to exact standards.

How to cite a person or organisation

The people and organisation records available in Trove can be cited and recorded using the NLA persistent identifier eg http://nla.gov.au/nla.party-783658

1. Navigate to the person/organisation you would like to cite
2. Click on the ‘Cite this’ button
3. A pop up screen will be displayed with examples of commonly used citation styles, copy the citation that is most appropriate.

How do I link to an item?

The URL found in the address bar when viewing a work in Trove is bookmarkable. e.g. http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/10369439
