Cascade Brewery Hobart.

The brewery was founded by English migrants and brothers-in-law Peter Degraves and Major Hugh McIntosh.

There are conflicting accounts on when the brewery side of the business officially commenced.

One account outlines that in 1824 the brothers-in-law built a sawmill on their newly acquired 2,000 acres of land. But it’s believed that the brewery side of the business didn’t actually commence until 1832.  This 1924 article from The Mercury, details this version of the story.

However another account in The Mercury from 1952 says the brewery was built and started operating in 1824.
