The name 'Rosella' was derived from the Sydney suburb of Rose Hill where the Eastern Rosella was very abundant in the 19th Century. People referred to them as 'Rose Hillers' or 'Rose Hill Parakeet' which, in typical Australian fashion, became shortened to 'Rosellas'.

In this article from 1868 listing the ornithology of the colony, the common name “Rose Hill Parakeet” is accompanied by Platycercus exilniualus, the scientific name for the Eastern Rosella.

This 1951 article about an Adelaide Museum exhibit on Rosellas looks at the name’s origin.
