Audio player
Some audio recordings found on Trove can be played entirely online. Use the audio player to listen to oral history interviews and folklore recordings from the National Library of Australia.
Select Listen in the Trove record, then the Trove Digital Library or National Library of Australia access link. You will need to read and accept the End User Licence Agreement by selecting I Accept to open the recording in the audio player.
Recording information
Recording information is located in a column on the left hand side of the screen. It includes information about the audio recording such as title, date of recording, contributors and access conditions.
Player controls
The player controls enable navigation and interaction with the playlist. They are located along the top of the right hand side of the screen.
Hide details: Display or hide the recording information column
Playlist: Choose from a series of recording sessions. The current session will be displayed on the right hand side of the progress bar
Live Transcript: Select to follow the transcript in the Transcript pane as the audio plays. This will activate with the audio is played. Select this button again to revert to standard text transcript
Download: Download digital copies of the audio recording, summary and transcript. Audio recording is available in MPEG audio format at 48 kbps, 128 kbps or 256 kbps, and the file size will vary depending on the level of sound quality. Summary and transcript are available in Plain Text or PDF format. Note: Permission to use material in the Oral History Collection is conditional on you accepting the terms of the licence
Search: Enter keyword/s to search within the transcript and summary
Progress bar: Select specific points in the recording to start from when you select Play, or to skip to during Play
Play: Play the audio recording
Pause: Pause the player at that point in the recording.
Stop: Stop playing the recording. This will reset the player to the beginning of the recording
Mute: Select to turn off the sound, while still playing audio. The icon will appear as during muting. Select again to turn on the sound
Adjust Volume: Adjust the audio volume of the player by selecting a point on the volume level bar
Max volume: Play the recording at the maximum volume
Transcript pane
This pane appears beneath the audio player. It displays a text transcript of the audio recording. You can change the height of the pane by selecting the adjustment handle at the bottom of the pane and dragging up or down to the required size.
If the audio recording is split into sessions, you can select which session transcript to view from the button options:
The session transcript that you select will appear even if the player is playing a different session. To sync the transcript with the audio recording, select On from the adjacent Sync button:
Each section of the transcript has a citation option. Select
to generate URL citation details.Summary pane
This pane appears beneath the Transcript pane. It displays summarized descriptions of sections of the audio recording. You can change the height of the pane by selecting the adjustment handle at the top of the pane and dragging up or down to the required size.
If the audio recording is split into sessions, you can select which session summary to view from the button options:
The session summary that you select will appear even if the player is playing a different session. To sync the summary with the audio recording, select On from the adjacent Sync button:
Each section of the summary has a citation option. Select
to generate URL citation details.
