MINERS SAVED
FROM GAS
FILLED MINE
BATHURST, Thursday. - Two miners were
rescued by colleagues after lying unconscious for
nearly two hours in a gas filled gold mine 100 feet
below the earth's surface, today.

Shortly before 10 o'clock
this morning a dynamite
charge tailed to explode pro
perly. It filled the mine with
fumes.
Of the 16 men working in
the mine 14 managed to

way to safety.
At the top, Longmore and
Fraser were missed. I

the mine again, but were
forced back by the fumes.
The air was cleared by
pumping fresh air into the
mine, but it was two hours
before rescuers could attempt
another entry.
