Tho Bollerine annual ploughing match took placo on
Thursday, 1st July, on the ground of Air. John
AVilliamson, Bollerine Hills.
Tho ground chosen for tho match waa a rich black
soil, slightly undulating, but frco from Btono and roots.
At oloven o'clock, tho appointed hour for commencing,
horeo ploughi, throo bullock teams, and four boyu'
ploughs.
At a givon signal, crack went tho bullock whips, and
off Btnrted tlio teams amid tho cheers of tho spcctatoi a.
Tho crown furrow was soon complotcd, but, in tho ma
jority of oaBos, not so neatly aa wo havo socn them on
othor occasions. Tho men kept steadily at their work,
and it soon becaino ovidont that the prizo man of last
year had aomo very dangerous competitors for tho prizes
this year.
Tho men had to croes -plough, but tho boys had a
pieco of land selected for thorn with straight ploughing.
if not suporior to Iho mon's. About ono o'clock a lun
cheon waa brought round to tho mon. After which the
majority of tho spectators woro invited to partiko of a
cold collation liberally providod by Mr. Johu William
son.
As tho afternoon woro away tho ploughmen exhibited
that nnxioty which showed that thoy had dono their
best, and each was in hopos that his work would bo de
clared tho boBfc. About four o'clock tho last furrow was
turnod and finished by tho most backward of ' tho
ploughmen. And tho judges, Moasni. O'Farrell, Audir
Bon, nnd Bryant, commonccd thoir important and
onerous duties. After having apent 'nearly an hour in
their examination, thoy mado tho following awarda : —

Tho prizo for tho best pair of horson was awardod to
Mr. John Williamaon ; an I that for tho pair of best
groomed hones ou tho field was awarded to Mr. Goorgo
Scott. Unfortunately, no montion wai mado by tho
judgca of the description of ploughs used by the prizo
ploughmon.
Owing to tho heavy naturo of tho Boil, tho land did
not look so well finished na it would have dono had. it
been on light sandy soil. There is still room for im
provomcut in tho ploughmon'; greater regularity might
with practiconnd caro bo attained by thorn. Thoy will
havo to look sharp after their laurels, or tho rising ge
uoration will walk in and snatch thom from thorn. Tho
boya1 work wns vory creditable, and would not disgraco
vetcrau ploughmen. Tho land turned up by tho bullock
teams wns rather dooper than tho avcrago turned up by
tho horso teams, it averagod from fivo to six inches,
while that turned up by tho horao teams scarcely averaged
four inches.
Mr. O'Farroll, as ono of tho judges, having road out
tho names of tho 6ucceesful coinp3titors, was rewarded
with three choors, bo lustily givon, that many lookod
rathor nurprisod at having caught themselves in tho act
of giving way to cnthuBiaam.
Tho display of cattlo was auperior to anything yet
witnessed nt iho Hoada, and thia year's ploughing match
will givo a fresh impotus to tho ploughmen, many of
whom scorned desirous to improvise privato mutches to
decido thoir relative aupcriority. — Gcelong Advertiser.
