NOTES IN THE COMMIONWEALTH
PARLIAMENT.
Melbourne, Thursday. -- For about two
hours and a half this alternoon the Senate
was engaged in discussing a motion of
academic interest brought forward by Sena
tor Styles for the federaliaation of the rail
ways of Australia as soon as possible.

of all the tailway systems of Australia un
der one management, unifying the gauges,
and so on, wouldl produce better results
than were now possible. Senator Gray point
ed out one or two objections,' and other
members stated other reasons why the
motion should not be adopted. The debate
was eventually adjourned. Further consider

committee.
Several weeks ago Mr. Edwards put
a motion on the business paper of the
House of Representatives reciting its deter
mination that the present system of party
government should be supptlanted by one
of elective 'Ministries. Later Mr. Fowler
placed a motion on the same subject on the
business paper, and Mr. Edwards withdrew
his. To-day the resumed debate on MIr.
Fowler's motion came on, and when the
hour arrived for paossing on to other busi
ness-the debate was adjourned. Mr. Knox
launched his mostion for the aplpointment of
a select committee to consider and report
upon the States' debts question. The de
bate was adjourned.
The Commerce Bill was considered in
committee.
