LOCAL NEWS.
After a six years' residence at Mount Barker,
as representative for the Wertheim Co., Mr.
E. F. G. Thomson has left Mt. Barker to take
up his residence at Stirling East. He will be
much missed at Mt. Barker.
The death is announced of Mr. Alexander
McDonald, who died at Hartley last week, at -
the age of 81 years. He was a pioneer of the
state, and. had lived in the district for very :
mav vears. possessing considerable landed'
property. He had been twice married, and
has left six daughters and two sons. Mrs.
Berry Smith, of this town, is a daughter of the
deceased gentleman.
Two Holstein bulls, from Mr. J. W. Porter's
atard farm, Port Victor, have been purchased
and forwarded by rail to Victoria, purchased

on Saturday morning. An inquest was held
at the institution on Monday morning, a
verdict of accidental occurrence of injury
causing death being returned.
On Monday morning Mr. G. J. Reed lost
a valuable polo pony,' Vendetta, which was
running in one of his paddocks in company
with severalotherponies. A kick from another
horse boke its off tore leg, and.it had to be
destroyed. .- The animal was engaged the polo
matches on Friday, and thegymkhanaeveventa '
on Saturday last, and was a clever performer
in polo work.

Miss Carlien Jure, the winner of the- Elder
scholarship in pianoforte playing this year,
is the youngest daughter ot Dr. Jure, late
mayor of Port Adelaide. She is a-, pupil of
Mr. Bryceson Treharne. Last December she
was awarded the gold medal of the -Associated
Board of the Royal Academr -of Music and the
Royal College of Music, being the candidate
who had secured the highest number of marks

The outdoor gangs at the Yatala Labor
Prison, Dry Creek, made a sensational dash
for liberty on Friday afternoon, some of the
most dangerous criminals making a futile
attempt to regain their liberty. Nine of the
men, among whom were Osborne and Williams,
who gained notoreity as members of the :
counterfeiting gang, the former also serving a
sentence for shooting constable Murphy,
Dyke (a notorious burglar), and Myles Flynn
(serving 20 years for the Port Adelaide highway
robbery), got away from the. precincts of their
prison home, but all were recaptuted, thanks
to the smart efforts of the warders, by 7 o'clock
the same evening.
