Last Summer of
Inadequate Water
Supply _ CITY ENGINEER
Provided there was no unusually steep in
crease in the population, this should be the last
summer Lismore would be troubled with an in
adequate water supply
This was stated by Lismore
City Council Engineer (Mr. H.
G. Murray), who has just re
turned from Sydney and Bris
bane, where he has been endeav
ouring to expedite the delivery
of essential pipes and fittings
to augment the present supply.
The basic cause of the present
inadequate water supply in some
, parts of Lismore was the fact
that the population had out
grown the council's installation.
This growth was not beyond
that anticipated by council when
works were planned and orders
placed to cope with the posi
tion, during the closing war
years.
The main trouble today was
caused by the difficulty in se
curing the delivery of those
• orders, said Mr. Murray.
However, if supplies come to
hand as anticipated, I expect the
■ present situation to progressively
. improve from the end of this
year.
"At the present time council
■ has sufficient equipment to pump
: all the available water into the
principal reservoirs in High
[ Street. The difficulty is to get
that water to the reservoir at
Girard's Hill, which serves the
southern and eastern areas of
Lismore where the growth has
been most rapid.
"To do this at the present
nine the v/ater has to travel
along the main pipes used for
reticulation purposes, and the
reservoir can only be replen
ished at night."
Consequently, the water
height in the reservoir could not
be maintained, and at times of
heavy draw the mains and lat
erals were not large enough to
carry water from the reservoirs
to streets in the higher reaches
of the city, said Mr. Murray.
Plans to overcome the present
difficulties include the construc
tion of a new reservoir on the
western side ,of Wyrallah RGad,
the building of a feeder pump
ing station at the corner of
Spring Street and First Avenue,
and the laying of large mains.
A tender for the construction
of the reservoir has been let but
owing to the difficult steel posi
tion, the reservoir may not be
completed before next summer.
! "When the new reservoir is
installed and the new pumping
station operating to boost the
supply to it and the existing
Girard's Hill reservoir, Lis
more's water supplies will be
solved for many years," he said.
A large proportion of the pipes
ordered had already been de
livered to Lismore and some
had been laid, he added.
Mr. Murray said the value of
(restrictions on the use of water
was that they reduced the load,
and consequently water became,
available to houses higher up on
the hills.
