Electricity Supply To
North Coast Key To
Goonellabah Transfer
Lismore City Council has decided that it would be
inadvisable to take further action on the proposed trans
fer of a portion of Goonellabah to the city area until
the future of the electricity supply to the North Coast
has been clarified.
Goonellabah Progress Association will be in
formed accordingly.
This was decided by Lismore City
Council at its meeting last night
upon the recommendation of the
Finance and General Purposes
Committee.
When the time was opportune,
further consideration will be given
to the proposal.
Gundurimba Shire Council will
be advised accordingly.
Casino Municipal Council and
the Richmond River (Electricity)
County Council will be invited to
confer with Lismore City Council
on a recommendation from the
Local Government Electricity Ad-
visory Committee, seeking council's
views in connection with electric
ity supply to the North Coast area.
The Town Clerk (Mr. L. Allan)
will investigate the possibility of
accommodating delegates, during
the King's Birthday week-end in
June, to a public convention which
it is proposed should be held in
Lismore.
In reply to an inquiry from coun-
cil as to the anticipated number
requiring accommodation, the
Local Government Association of
N.S.W. stated that a total of 86
delegates and their wives had at
tended the Tamworth conference
in May last year. _
It was hoped that a larger num
ber would visit Lismore, but this
would depend largely upon local
support for the convention, added
the association.
Photographs of all playing areas
in the municipality, including
those under construction, together
with a statement on council's ex
penditure on parks in recent years,
will be forwarded to Mr. W. Frith.
M.L.A., to place before the Minis-
ter for Lands.
This action followed a letter
from the Minister, stating that
consideration of increased grants
for parks must wait until alloca-
tion of the vote for miscellaneous
parks and cemeteries was made
during the financial year.
The Minister will also be advised
of the voluntary work done by
citizens on various sporting areas.
A sub-committee, comprising the
Deputy Mayor (Ald. W. A. Walms-
ley) and Aldermen A. W. McKinnon
and N. Thompson was appointed to
investigate and report on applica
tions for increases in public vehicle
fares.
This sub-committee will deal with
an application from the secretary
of the Transport Workers' Union,
submitted on behalf of the taxi
cab proprietors to increase their
fares by 25 per cent.
It will also consider a letter from
the Department of Road Transport
and Tramways, advising that an
application had been received from
Mr. A. R. Riley, of South Lismore,
to amend certain bus fares.
Mr. A. Groom, of Lamington
National Park, will be invited to
attend a meeting in Lismore to dis
cuss full details of the aims and
objects of the National Parks
Association of Queensland.
The move was sponsored by the
National Parks Association, Kyogle.
Mr. A. C. Jarman will be informed
that no taxi stand is available for
allocation in Keen Street. He will
be asked if he still wishes to be con
sidered for the allocation of a stand
in the Wyrallah Road-Avondale
Avenue area.
Mr. Jarman had intimated that it
appeared this stand would not be a
paying proposition.
BALLINA ST. BRIDGE
The Maritime Services Board of New South Wales
will not agree to the construction of a bridge without a lift
span over the Richmond River at Ballina Street, as such
a construction would isolate all shipping from the ralway
wharf.
This was stated in a letter from
the Board.
The Department of Main Roads
will be advised accordingly, and
requested to indicate when it is
anticipated plans of the proposed
bridge will be completed.
A recommendation will be made
to the Department of Road Trans
port that Mr. C. E. Richards, bus
proprietor, be allowed to increase
children's bus fares to 1/6 per
week for the first child and 1/
per week for each additional child
in the same family.
(The present charge is a flat
rate of 1/- per week for each
child).
Provided no greater price is paid
than that submitted in the ten
der, and subject to delivery being
effected by February 7, the tender
of Lismore Motors Pty. Ltd. for
the supply of a three-ton truck for
the electricity department was
accepted.
The price quoted was £860/11/4d.
The services of the parks cura
tor (Mr. E. Dowswell), who has
reached the retiring age, will be
extended for a further period until
December 31.
Tourist Bureau Move
Miss Judy Gainford will be in-
formed that council considers the
establishment of a tourist bureau
should be on a North Coast dis-
trict-wide basis, and, owing to ac-
commodation difficulties, the pre-
sent time was thought to be in
opportune.
Miss Gainford had sought coun-
cil's views in connection with the
opening of a tourist bureau and
had offered the services of her
self and her mother in such a pro
ject.
In the event of council decid-
ing against the formation of such
a bureau, she inquired to what
extent council would financially
support a privately conducted
bureau.
A recommendation from the
Traffic Inspector (Mr. L. H. John
ston) that a good hire vehicle
licence should be granted to Mr.
D. Bradbury was approved.
Mr. Bradbury will operate from
a public stand in Keen Street in
front of the premises of Messrs.
Brand Bros., and Mr. P. Cox.
This site would not cause in
convenience, and would be cen
tral to nearby weekly sales, report
ed the inspector.
Further consideration to the es
tablishment of municipal markets
will be given by a sub-committee
consisting of the Mayor (Ald. R.
Granger) and Aldermen H. N.
Reid, L. Evans, H. P. Habib and
N. Thompson.
The Town Clerk (Mr. L. Allan)
and the City Engineer (Mr. H. G.
Murray) will submit an applica
tion for a share of the petrol tax
allocation towards expenditure in
curred in the repair and mainten
ance of roads. ■
