FATAL INJURIES
STRUCK BY MOTOR LORRY
POLICE DETAIN MAN
Ernest Robert Bird (46), of
Dalley Street, Lismore, was
killed instantly at South Lis
more about 6 o'clock last night
when he was knocked off the
running board of a stationary
motor car by a motor truck
travelling in an opposite direc
tion to which the stationary
ear was facing. Bird received
terrible injuries to his head
and limbs. The impact threw
him 20 feet from the motor car.
The lorry was driven by Alexander
Alfred" Larsen, of Spring Hill, Cor
aki, and after the accident Lismore
police took a man into custody and
a serious charge will be preferred
against him this morning.
TALKING BESIDE CAR
Bird, who was a Clarence River
County Council foreman on the new
transmission line construction work
between Nymboida and Lismore, was
standing beside a motor car pulled
up on the side of the main Lismore
Grafton road near the entrance t<?
the slaughtering premises of Messrs. •
Foley Bros. He was talking to
Messrs. Basil S. Marsh (constructional
engineer) and Standish T. 0'Grady
(foreman), who were seated in the
car. Seeing the lorry approach,
Bird stepped up on to the running
board.
CRUSHED AGAINST CAR
The lorry, used in a carrying busi
ness by Messrs. L. R. Horsdwell and
A. A. Larsen, and plying between
Woodburn, Coraki and Lismore, ap
proached from the direction of Lis
more. The rear part of the lorry
struck the front wheel hub on the
motor car and the side of the lorrry
tore Bird from his position on the '
car. He was crushed against the
side of the stationary car and . then
hurled about 20 feet.
AMBULANCE CALLED
The driver of the lorry pulled up
and with his pasengei'fc, Messrs. 33.
Preston, T. Birch, and Mrs. Birch, of
Coraki, went to Bird Ss assistance.
Messrs. Marsh and O'Grady sum
moned the Lismore District Ambulance,
but when Bird was examined by a
doctor he was dead. The body was
taken to the morgue.
LISMORE BUILDINGS
The late Mr. Bird was a partner in
the Sydney firm of Messrs. Kennedy
and Bird, contractors, a partnership
recently dissolved. That firm built
the Clarence River County Council'a
power house at. South Lismore, St,
John's Agricultural College at Wood
lawn and St. Yincent's Hospital afc
East Lismore. Since 1980, when
Messrs. Kennedy and Bird fir^t started
operations in Lismore, the firm also
erected a bulk store for T. MeDermot.t
and Son, Ltd., in Larkin" Lane, and
remodelled the old Government Sav»
ings Bank and the T. andi G. Building
in Woodlark:street. . • ,
•Mr. Bird recently decided perman
ently to reside in Lismore, and Mrs,
Bird and family have only been a short
time ' in Lismore. In ' addition to a
widow, three sons, Robert, John and
James Bird, and one daughter, Pat
ricia, survive.
The funeral, leaving St. Carthage's
Cathedral at 3.30 p.m., takes place
Lismore to-day. '
