DIGGERS WORK AT BYRON BAY TO-DAY
BYRON BAY, Friday. .
Byron Bay returned soldiers will
handle such tools on the esplanade'
to-morrow as might indicate they are
about to resume acquaintance with
trench, digging; but they will be dig
ging holes to plant shade trees.
At the meeting- of the branch of the
Returned Soldiers' League last night
arrangements were made for the work,
and details were attended to.
The co-operation of Byron Shire
Council has been'obtained. ,
The president (Mr. R. M. Curnow)
occupied the chair, and there was an
attendance of 29. A welcome was ex
tended to Mr. Holden (Lismore), who
responded.
Mr. R. Cheers for the sub-committee
appointed to investigate tree-planting
reported that honeysuckle trees had
been planted as an experiment, and
to date had proved successful. The
sub-committee were thanked for their
services, and were asked to supervise
to-morrow's work. The advice of
Messrs. M. Smith and R. Brownell
(Byron Shire Council's engineer and
clerk) will be sought in connection
with the lay-out, etc.
It was resolved, after members had
explained that assistance had been
oft'oved, that the support of the public
i>e. enlisted. " \
An invitation was received from
Myocum P. and C. Association to ; a
speeial memorial service to be con
ducted during the afternoon of Anzac
Day, when trees will be planted as
memorials to the three men "who lost
their lives last year in the 'plane crash
in that locality. <
The association Will be thanked for
the .invitation and as many as possible
will attend from the Byron Bay branch.
The majority of those present signified
their intention of attending.
Mr. E. Shrubb reported that arrange
ments had been made for the Anzac
memorial service on Sunday, April 23,
in the Literary Institute at , 3 p.m.
Rev. F. ^ Trafford Walker (Mullum
bimby) will cuuduct the service. Mr.
Shrubb was thanked.
Mr. A. Munro stated that residents
had donated clothes, etc., for distri
bution to necessitous cases. It was
agreed that an advertisement be in
serted in the press thanking the ladies
concerned. It was also resolved that
this work continue and that Mr. A.
Munro continue to collect. He will be
pleased to receive donations, as prev
iously.
The secretary (Mr. T. Elliott) said
it. was understood the Railway Depart;,
ment intended to plant trees in the
jQ&flt to the station.
