THE 'VARSITY BOAT RACE.
OXFORD WINS.
LONDON, March 26
The fifty-fifth annual boat race
between crews of the Oxford and
Cambridge Universities was rowed on
Friday, and resulted in a win for
Oxford by 12 lengths.
Oxford has now won 32 races, the
last 0 in succession, and Cambridge 22.
There was a dead heat in 1877.
A strong north-easterly wind blew,
and the river was terribly rough, so
that a postponement was probable
until at the last the boats were filled
with air bladders.
Oxford selected the sheltered Middlesex
side of the river. I
Cambridge were the first away, and
led by a quarter of a length. At Duke
Head the boats were level. At Clasper's
Oxford led by three lengths, and at
Crabtree by four. At Hammersmith
Cambridge were suffering from heavy
water, which caused a rolling.
The race was a procession from Chis-
wick. Oxford was ten lengths ahead
at Thornycroft, fourteen at Devonshire
Meadows, and passed Barnes Bridge
45sec. ahead.
The Cambridge boat was then nearly
full of water ; Oxford shipping less.
Cambridge stopped, exhausted, at the
ship.
The time was 13min. 30sec.
[Last year the race was rowed on April 3,
has a high, cold east wind, with occasional
showers of rain and sleet. Cambridge had
the Middlesex side, starts d best, and, after
the first stroke, were a third of a length to
the good; but Oxford, rowing 37 to the 39
of C'tnbri he, gradually overhauled them.
At Chiswick Ferry. Oxford was nearly four
lengths ahead Cambridge reduced the gap, |
but Oxford in, the lead to the winning!
post, which have pushed 2A lengths ahead.
