THE MAINE DISASTER.
REPORT RECEIVED AT
WASHINGTON.
The report of the Commission appointed
to inquire into the cause of
the disaster to the United States war-
ship Maine, in the harbour atHauma,
has been received at Washington, and
the Cabinet is now considering it
prior to its being made public.

Pending official statement all American
reports agree that the explosion
which sunk the vessel was external
and that it caused a second explosion
in the forward magazine of the war-
ship,
The Spaniards vehemently deny that
the explosion arose from external
causes.
President McKinley desires to treat
the disaster as an accidental incident,
preferring to intervene on humanitarian,
instead of hostile grounds'.
