RHODESIA REBELLION.
SOME DESPERATE FIGHTING. A
MORE SOLDIERS WANTED, The
work of fortifying Surrey Hills
against attacks from the Matabele
rebels is proceeding with vigour. Captain

Captain Brand's column, which had
been cornered on the road to Fort
Mile, had been relieved by Captain
Macfarlane's force of 200 men, equipped
with machine guns, and the combined
force set out on the march to Eiranda.
They were, however, attacked by 1,500
natives, and their ammunition became
exhausted after a desperate fight.
The Matabeles tried to silence the
Maxims,, but lost 550 of their number
in the attempt.
Two Pipes are eating stolen cattle
and indulging in war dances within
twelve miles of Buluwayo.
The newspapers urge despatch of
regular troops to the scene of disturbance,
and fear that Sir Hercules
Robinson's optimism is misplaced.
There are 800 Martini rifles and
750,000 cartridges in the hands of the
volunteers at Mafeking and Gaberonis,
and 333 Metfords and 500,000 cartridges
at Kimberley.
Reinforcements are pushing on
rapidly to the front.
