President Roxas
Dead
MANILA. — President
Manuel Roxas died sud
denly last week, following a
heart attack. He was 56.
He is succeeded by the Vice
President and Foreign Secre
tarv fSenor ElDidio Ouirino).
who is 57.
Senor Quirino, who is known
as a capable diplomat, nego
tiated the Military Assistance
Pact with the US. Always pro
American, he has been a strict
adherent of the Roxas policies.
President Roxas had just be
gun his third term of office. He
had worked unsparingly for the
recovery of the Philippines from
the devastation suff ered during
the war.
When the Japanese invaded
the islands in 1941 he joined
Gen. MacArthur's staff as a
liaison officer and went through
the seige of Corregidor. He
escaped from the island* but was
later captured by the Japanese.
His subsequent relations with
the Japanese are still a subject ?
of controversy. He entered the
puppet Government and helped
draft the constitution of the
'independent' Philippines
which declared war. on the US.
But Roxas himself— and he
was supported ? by Gen. Mac
Arthur^eclared that he used
his position as a cloak under
which to carry out espionage
and to direct guerilla activities.
