THE TURF.
LISMORE TURF CLUB.
Anniversary races.
The Lismore Turf Club meeting was held
on Saturday. The following "-were the offi
cials:—jJudge, Mr. J. -W; Eronghton; sti
pendiary steward, Mr. ^Y. H. Carmont;
starter,* Mr. J. O'Donnell; handicapper,
Mr.. H. S. Pollack; timekeeper, Mr. E. W.
Mackny; clerk of scales, M?.. H. Beeching;
clerk (if course, Mr.. H. Mackuey; paddock
stewards, Messrs. 3: Fields, O.' Meurer, R.
Garrard, J. C. Mcintosh; committer, presi
dent, Mr. E. "W. Mackay, vice-president,
Mr. J. W. Broughton; treasurer, Dr. J.
Coen; Messrs. E. W. Ma'ekay, J. W."
Brou^liton, Dr.-.L jGoen, O. Meurer, R. G.
GarraVd, H. C.' Beeching, J. 0. Mcintosh,
.T. Fields; secretary, Mr. A; M. Allen; as
sistant secretary, Mr. A. Greaves..
The club were fortunate in having good;
weather, and they lmd .a Record .attendance,
•for a one-day meeting:; ^Considerable (lis-;
satisfaction was expressed by horse' own
ers at the •club only putting "on, a one-day.
programme. Fourteen bookmakers were
present, and. all had. a good, winning. day.
>Five favorites out.of seven were beaten. The
'Rayner t?ota.lisator was in use, but was not
very well patronised, although the dividends
paid were better than the quoted prices of
the* winners. It. was necessary to run the
Maiden Handicap in two divisions, actually
two raees, so the' public ■•'•had seven , races to
speculate upon. The racing was free from
accidents'^ and- ri<* •punishments4 were inflict
ed, but Mr. Carmont,-the stipendiary stew
ard, had a quiet .word with. two or three
during the, day which, they will do well to
keep in mind. They were evidently told
"that such an irregularity must not be re
peated.". In each of the seven furlongs
events the winner was favorite, and won
by five or six lengths.. . In the. other five
citing, the results being'in doubt until this
number "went up. The" starting in all the
events was first-class. Half the public
'were, .unable. to procure a race book. The
club will make- a handsome profit over the
meeting. .' :
