GAWLER NEWS.
Gawler, September 26.
At the corporation meeting last night com
munications were received in terms of the
Water Conservation Act of 1886 from the Com
missioner of Public Works and Messrs. J. H.
Packard and E. L. Lutz, C.E., in reference to
the proposal Gawler Plains irrigation colony.
Councillor Taylor proposed that they be
received, and that consideration be de
council. He did not approve of an under
taking like that beine carried out by
a private company, and thought the Govern
ment ought not to give up control of the land
which included the site of the reservoir.
Neither did he think Gawler should run the
risk of allowing a rip-rap dam to be con
structed. Should it fail, as similar erections
bad done in America, Gawler would stand a
-very poor show. Councillor Hill seconded the
motion, which was carried. The town clerk
presented the draft of a petition to Parliament
in the matter of the claim of the corpora
tion against the Government for land
taken for the purpose of erecting thereon
a pumping station. Deferred to a special
meeting of the council. The inspector by
instructions submitted a return showing the
cost) of street watering during the last three
years.
The concert] in St. Joseph's schoolroom last
night, given by the Catholic Young Men's
Society, passed off successfully. The per
formers were afterwards entertained by Prior
Mcrphy at the Roman Catholic presbytery.
An old resident of Gawler (Mr. W. F.
Richards) died on Sunday, and was buried
to-day, the funeral being largely attended.
On Saturday evening an open-air concert,
was given by Rigg's Band from the Town '-
Hall balcony. A collection was taken up on
behalf of the unemployed relief fund. -
