MUTINY
LONDON, March 23
On the eve of the celebrations
in Eire to mark the Easter rising
of 1916, several Extremist Irish
Republican Army convicts mutin
ied in Dartmoor prison this after
noon.
Twelve of the most dangerous
I.R.A. ring leaders, in the mutiny
snatched the keys from the warders
while they were exercising and re
leased the others, who shouted wild
ly. and collected a pile of bedding,
which was set on fire.
One warder, who was thrust into
a cell,-was given a gas mask and told
"to be a good boy." The convicts.
who were not released yelled through
the grilles, adding to the pande
monium.
The governor swiftly summoned all
warders and barricaded the rioters in
one section by piling up cement bags
in the doorways.
LEADERS OVERPOWERED
The ringleaders were overpowered
after a short struggle and handcuffed.
and order was restored in three hours.
Later the warders attended the usual
Saturday night dance.
The prison brigade quelled the fire
in 90 minutes. A large hole was
burnt in the roof. The Home Office
stated that the damage was slight.
The ringleaders were placed in separ
ate cells.
This is the first attemut at mutiny
since the. historic fight of 1932.
