The weather still continues very sultry, and every
thing looks quite parched up. The farmers are now
waiting for rain, as they are anxious to commence
ploughing.
The Easter holidays passed off very tamely here,
but at Callington it was different.
On Good Friday the Oddfellows held their anni
versary, when a good number of the brothers
assembled at the Lodee house, and w«H«.ii in
procession through the township, headed by
a brass band, and also bearing the splendid
banner belonging to the Flinders Lodge, Nairne.
After parading the township the brothers
assembled in the Wesleyan Chapel, which
was crowded, to hear a lecture from Brother J.
,y£er»,of Naimei oa the 'Principles and Practices
of Oddfellowship.' In the evening the dinner took
place, when between 50 and 60 sat down to an excel
lent spread, provided by Host Kingston. After the
removal of the cloth Mr. J. Ryder was voted to the
chair Mr.Townsend,M.P., was to have occupied
the chau-, but owing to indisposition he was unable to
attend, Abe usual toasts were gone through, and a
very pleasant evening spent. It appear? by the
report read that the Order is in a very flourishine
condition. ^^'
The Primitive Methodists also held a tea meeting
on Good Friday, which was well attended
The races at Oallington took place on Easter
Monday, when a great concourse of people assembled,
aud some very good sport was made.
I had an opportunity of viewing a fine lot of grapes
grown at the vineyard of 3. B. Young, Esq. ; they
were certainly the finest grapes that I have seen this
year. Mr. Young has planted about 12 or 14 acres
of vines, and this is the first year of then- bearing.
It is hoped that the epecu latioa will prove suc
cessful, as then, perhaps, we may see vineyards
springing up in other places in our neighborhood.
Scarlatina is'still raging in our township ; several
deaths have occurred among the young, and many
are not expected to live. Four deaths have occurred
within nine days in this limited community. It is to
be hoped that it will soon, begin, to disappear.
The Foresters' oause in our township is beginning
to revive a little ; they have for some time been in a
very dormant state, but things are taking a turn.
Six members are to be initiated into the mysteries of
the Order to-night.
