LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
THE FRUIT TRADE. -'
SIR-Your sub leader and report of the
Franklin discussion are highly interesting to
me. And just after reading them a very
much more interesting letter came from a
Sydney agent When the Oonah was just
leaving last 1 trip a telegram came from
Sydney quoting green peas : 72. bushel ;
strawberries, 4s. quart ; cabbage, 55 dozen.
By a desperate effort a lot of each were
shipped. To-day's returns are-Peas, Is
bushel; cabbage, la, dozen; strawberries,
4d. quart, and no complaint about the
quality or condition of the peas and cabbage,
but the market is glutted." Such is
shipping to the other colonies. Re London
-Is it likely that the broker, who, may be,
has half a dozen retail shops of his own, is
going to trouble himself about our welfare ?
But our growers are so charmingly pleased
with their own little petty jealousies that
sooner than work' together they will let
agents and brokers grow fat on the proceeds
of their produce. If such Growers' Unions'
were formed here as are found everywhere
else with our own agencies Where wanted,
the thing would be settled, and return good
interest for any outlay. 'I propose a large
conference should be at once held in Hobart
with delegates from all districts empowered
to act. Yours, etc,
TOMAHAWK.
Hobart, December 20. '
