THE TAXING PROPOSALS.
SIR,-I would like to ask what chance the
taxpayers of this colony have to be con-
sidered in the matter of levying taxation,
when we find that all those electorates who
have done their duty, and met together to
consider the proposals of the Government,
are treated with contempt by their members
Why do these members attend the meetings,
I would ask, if they have not the ability to
«how to their constituent« that the proposals
are good, nor the decency to allow common
.ease speakers to influence them ?
Take the memben for Kingborough, Dr.
Crowther and Gill, who attended meeting«,
and with their constituent« condemned tile
tax on personalty, but who have «ince voted
with indecent servility for all the Govern-
ment aik. ,
Who have gone back on themselves and
their expressed opinion that professional
men and «alarie« «hould be tated.and burked
any attempt to impôts «nob taxation?
Instance the elect of Glenorchy, who last
night attended a meeting of his constituent«,
and «aid nothing, in favour of tax on
personalty, but went back to the House and
«oted In favour of it, although hi« con-
stituent« passed a revolution unanimously,
"That th« personalty tax is injurious, that
it would lead to evasion and deceit, that it
ia unequal, and therefore ,an unfit tax, and
that it hu the disadvantage«, without the
compensation of an income tax." The faot
is, «ir, mob men «hould be (although they
appear not to be) ashamed to walk about
the «treen. !
They «peak against particular form« of
taxation, their constituent« do the same, but
.till they go and vote for them. '
It may 'bet tra» ,tha* they ikeep the
Government ¡u office, and-retain their «eat«
for a long period, but the eye« of the people
are on them, and it is «aid they have not the
courage of their opinion«, or they have not
brain« enough to form opiniona.and they are
led, metaphorically, by the nose to vote with
Ministen a« the member for Deloraine wa«
actually last night.
