Chinese Mass For
MANCHURIA
DRIVE i
CHUNGKING (A.A.P.).
Two Chinese Nationalist armies,
the 13th and 52nd, have been
landed from American trans
ports on the North China coast
close to the Manchurian border.
TIIE landing is reported to have beesn
made at the port of Chingwangtao.
on the Gulf-of Chihli, only five miles
from the Manchurian border.
Meanwhile the Communist and Nation
alist negotiators on Sunday attended
a new conference in Chungking, called
by the Chinese Democratic League in
an attempt to break the stalemate be
tween the opposing Chinese factions.
The league is composed mainly of Lib
eral "intellectuals," who have growing
influence.
* Warning that Manchuria might
secede and emerge as an independent
state, like Outer Mongolia, Vice-Ad
miral Barbey. the leading American
officer in North China, in an interview
at Chingwangtao, urged the Chinese
factions to settle their disputes peace-·
fully.
lie said a Nationalist entry Into Man
churia by sea was impossible because
the Communists controlled the porto,
therefore the logical land entry was
through Chanhaikwan. the coast ter
minus of the Great Wall on the Man
churian border, five miles north of
Chingwangtao. The Communists. how
ever, were firmly entrenched here.
It would therefore be better from the
Nationalists' viewnoint to permit the
Communists to take control, and yet
have Manchuria within Chinas'
national scope.
Vice-Admiral Barbey said he doubt
ed whether the Communists dominated
much of Manchuria. He believed large
areas in the north and east were con
trolled by local irregulars.
