FRANKLIN.
The jetties along the banks of our river
present at this time of the year rather an
animated appearance, as several of the fruitgrowers
are engaged in shipping their
apples. The crop this year is a very fair one,
though not so great as in former years, and
the s.s. Huon, with its tender the Pinafore;
is kept pretty well employed, as many as
2,000 cases having been sent away by the
former on a recent trip. The trade carried
on by these steamers will be greatly facilitated,
when the dredging of the bar at Castle
Forbes Bay is completed, the Huon captain
at the present time finding it necessary to
make a detour round Egg Island, in the
passage up to Franklin. This work will
prove a great boon to the district generally.
Diphtheria, to which reference was made
in a former letter, seems to be dying out, as
no fresh cases have been reported, though
there is still a great deal of sickness in the
district. The public school, which I understand
has been thoroughly cleaned and
fumigated, and which was closed for a fortnight
has been re-opened.
Owing to the great improvement which
during the past few years is noticeable in
connection with our roads and public works
generally, the winter season, now upon us
with all its severity, is not dreaded to the
same extent as in former years. The cutting
of the new canal through Egg Island
some time ago has also proved a great advantage,
as the population on the opposite
side of the river is increasing, and flourish-
ing orchards are to be seen in several places. There
is plenty room for improvement in
several of the by-roads, but the advantages
afforded by the wet fes above referred to are
much appreciated.
The Franklin Circulating Library has now
been open for several weeks, and at a recent
meeting of the committee the librarian, Mr.
James O'Bierne, reported that the results
were satisfactory. Over 100 volumes suitable
for a public library have recently been
added by the committee, and should sufficient
funds be obtained, it is probable that
further additions will be made from time to
time.
