! THE RECENT, CLARENCE DEPUTA
' >!~-TION.----^
SIR,-In your report. of the proceedings of
Thursday's deputation to the Ministry-'yoju_
done an injustice, which I desire to rectify.
Your reporter credits me with an apology to
Mr. James Gray which I never made whilst
even the very little that is reported of what
I did say might well cause your readers to
wonder what I had.to-apologiso for. I
simply defended Mr. Taylor, who was pretty
roughly handled, especially, by Mr; James
Gray and I only did for Mr. Taylor what
I have often done for Mr. James Gray and
many another man when unfairly attacked
behind the back; but in doing so I evidently
raised the-bristles of hon, member for
Sorell who thought to extinguish me with
one of his customary jokes by saying that
" if the steamer's pipes were choked, it was
clear that some of the councillors' pipes were
not choked." His allusionwasovidentlytomo,
and aslhadoften "piped on his behalf before,
amongst the electors of Sorell, I simply
warned the, honourable gentleman that
when be next presented himself to his constituents,
he might find "something more in
his own pipe than he could smoke with com-'
fort." This is what I did say, and if the hon.
member is wise, he may profit by my caution'
to his own advantage . Thanking
you for the good service which
you have done the district with which I have
been identified from my birth by your persistent
efforts to unlock the ferry, I beg
your insertion of this letter as an act of
simple justice Yours, etc., ? . ' '
