MISCELLANEOUS SmPPINO
The ALDiNQA.— It would be superfluous to eulogize the
Aldinga as as a fast boat, for that fact is sufficiently estab
lished, but on her late trip from Melbourne she had such
severe weather that her reputation as a comfortable vessel
in a heavy seaway received additional confirmation, for at
one period during the passage it blew so terrifically that close
reefed fore and aft sails were set, and the engine eased down
to quarter speed, yet she made fair headway and shipped
but little water. She left Melbourne at 2 p.m. on Friday
?with a strong N.W. gale blowing, and at 11 the same night
rounded Cape Otway, but had no sooner done so than the
gale increased in violence, and veered from west to north
west with occasional heavy squalls of hail and rain. It is
certain from observations that Captain Stewart's barometer
and aneroid acted off Cape Otway quite in accordance with
the instruments at our Shipping Reporter's station at
Lefevre's Peninsula, where it oscillated from 29035' to
29 ° 50% though al ways with a downward tendency. Through
out Saturday the same boisterous weather predominated,
and Sunday was a continuation. Passed the steamer
Havilah off Cape Bnffon, and at 9 p.m. was off Guichen Bay,
when the weather had somewhat moderated, but strong N.W.
winds prevailed till Monday at midday ; at 4.30 received
the boarding officers from the Semaphore Jetty, and at 5.30
was in harbor.
The FLa.vd.ah has made a lengthy passage consequent on
the heavy gales experienced throughout. During the earlier
portion she steamed bead to wind, but consequently, the
etock of coals being reduced to 24 hours' steaming, she was
hove to till the weather moderated. Captain Saunders
reports passing sufficiently close to the reef which is known
to exist S.S.W. of Cape WiUonghby Lighthouse to seethe
breakers, on it and by his computation itis distant from the
LighttnuBe about u miles.
The Elizabeth arrived from Port Augusta on Wednes
day morning, and anchored at the Lightship for orders.
The Asshde. -The barque Asshur, now lying at Levi's
Wharf, is a very handsome specimen of naval architecture.
In externals she is perfect, for tne lines are symmetrical,
and while h«r hull presents a graceful tout ensemble, it is, if
possible, heightened by the proportions of her spars and
rigging. She is now on her first voyage, and was built by
Messrs. Duthie & Sons, the eminent shipbuilders of Aber
deen, who have already furnished several smart ships to
toe Australian trade. Her dimensions are 136 feet over all,
26i feet breadth of beam, win 16J feet depth of hold; and
while her register tonnage U 460, she has capacity for 850
tons of general merchandise. She is classed Ai for 10 years
at Lloyd s, and while reviewing her appointments the
manner in which every known patent is brought into use on
Doard is remarkable. Cunningham's patent self-reefers are
on the topBsulyarda, (though Captain Collie prefers double
sails). Trotman. c ground tackle, patent pumps, distiller,
wmdtoss, and steering gear, all contribute to render the
vessel as perfect as possible. In passenger accommodation
the arrangements are excellent, having- a very neat main
cabin, with state rooms for twelve, and in this particular
point she is equal to anything in Port Adelaide for some
time past, for white every attention is pud to comfort, yet
the attempt at ornamentation has been successful. Gilt
mouldings and mahogany pannels, fretwork, and upholstery
contribute to render it equal to the most charming boudoir -
and as she is laid en from Port Wakefield for London, doubt
less she will receive a full complement of passengers. Her
commander is well known in the trade, and if his present
intentions are realised he will become a veteran in the Aus
tralian service.
