POLICE COURT— PORT ADELAIDE.
FBIDAY, MABCH 6.
[Before Mr. G. W. Hawkes, S.M.1
John Landry pleaded not guilty to assault
ing Catherine Read, at the Port Land Estate,
on the 4th instant. There was a crossinforma
tion by defendant. Catherine Read deposed
that on the day named defendant came to her
house complaining of the conduct of her
children, and said if he found them he would
beat them. ? Witness ordered him away, when
he shook his fist in h» r face, and afterwards spit
at her. By Mr. Dempster — He first complained
of my children beating his. Mary Jane Miller
saw defendant rash into Mrs. Read's house,
and corroborated the previous witness's state
ment. James Quin also deposed to the above
facts. . John Landry deposed that he went to
complain of Mrs. Read's children's conduct, and
she shoved him out, and threatened to throw
a jug of water at him (defendant). Fined 15s.
and costs. -
Monday, March. 9.
[Before Mr. G. W. Hawkes, S.M.
William Brttce appeared on the remanded
charge of appropriating certain goods, the pro
perty of Marks & Co., Melbourne. Prisoner
was identified by one of the Melbourne detec
tives, on whose .request prisoner was remanded to
Melbourne..
Samuel Wilson,- Chairman of the District
Council of Qaeenstown, was charged with using
insulting language and gestures towards Joshua
Evans, calculated to lead to a breach of the
peace. Joshua Evans stated, that as he was
passing along the North-parade on the 4th inst.
the defendant put his thumb to his nose, and
in an insulting manner used some abusive
epithets towards him. R, Phillips corroborated
the above evidence. The defendant in
defence produced a written memorial from
sundry ratepayers of the district, asking the
Council to appoint another Chairman in the
place of himself. This paper defendant com
menced to read ; but His Worship decided that
it was irrelevant to the present charge. After
making a statement the defendant was fined
40s. and costs.

Labobny.: — William Adams was charged by
Thomas Connolly with stealing a cap. his pro
perty. ' The prosecutor gave evidence to the
effect that he was in the White Horse Cellar,
drunk, and on the following morning missed the
cap produced. Charlotte Knapmaa deposed
that she ' saw the prisoner take a cap off infor
mant's head and run off with it She then
gave information to the police. . Detective
Wilcox stated— He arrested the prisoner and
found the cap produced conceale 1 in the bosom
of bis shirt. He stated that first 'witness was
a mate of his. Defendant, in defence, stated
he was drunk at the '. time and did not know
what he was doing. Sentenced to 24 hours'
imprisonment.

' IBefore Mr. G. W. Hawkes, S.M.1
Alfred James' Thompson, of Her Majesty's
Customs, was charged with discharging firearms,
on the 12th March, in Port Adelaide. The
evidence proved that defendant fired off a gun,
with the intention of killing some pigeons which
were flying over the wharf. The defendant
pleaded that he was not aware he was in
fringing the By-law of the Corporation. Fined
20s. and costs.
Mary Francis and Betsy Davis were charged
with assaulting Julia Goodman. There was a
. cross-information for assaulting Mary Francis.
Both informations were dismissed.
