Tho results of last year's census 111 France
have now been officially published. They
show that the population numbers but little
over .'i9,500,000 persons, the increase for tho
previous live years being only 349,261. In
the past 40 years the population has in
creased by only :5,500,000. The increase in
the last quinquennial period is accounted
for practically entirely ty the growth in
the population of the Seine department. In
64 departments the population lias actually
declined. The figures indicate a continual
migration from the rural districts to tho
large towns, especially to Paris, the popu
lation of which is returned, at 2.888,110.
