SEED WHEAT ADVANCES.
THE REPAYMENTS.
Melbourne. 9t'a March.
A year ago the ■Government advanced
^>93,127/15/1, under the Seed Wheat Ad
vances Act, l.o farmers who, in consfqucr.cc
of ilio drought, had suffered severely. Those
ivl-.o were able to ^ivo the Government a
mortgago over their holdings were allowed
fivo years to repay the advance, with in
terest. The majority o[ the settlors, how
ever, wore unable to give a mortgage, and
they had to giro the State lie-is on their
crops, and tho Government's share was pay
«l»l<! in January. In some districts, owing
to Ihe lateness of the harvest, a few weeks''
grace was allowed. Up to the 27th Febru
ary ;£32,330/l-i-/l, or more I hen ona-third of
tha total amount of the advance, was repaid
to the Lands department. Applications were
mado to lir. Taverncr, when. Mi-iister, by
those who had given liena on crops, to be
allowed t-vo or chrea years to repay their
.-•/Irauces, on condition tliat they gave liens
ono or two mor-.' oropa. In certain cases,
Mr. Taverner allowed the apn!-.;-a:ils to re
pay half this year and the other half next
year. The Auditor-General will query this,
but the Government vail vindicate it= action
to Parliament on the ground of Rood policy.
Other applications of the same kind will ho
dealt with by I ,r. Murray on their merits.
