The extraordinary "shanghaing" case reported
in Saturday's papers as having occurred at Port
Melbourne, where it was stated a seaman was
made drunk on board a newly arrived American
vessel, and then sold bythKerimps (or £4 to the
captain of the wool ship Avenger, a British vessel,
hid an unexpected development to-day when the
inis-ting man, William Lynch, was brought up at
the Port Melbourne Court charged as a lunatic,
and remanded to the gaol hospital. Lynch, it
appears, showed symptoms of lunacy prior to Iih
arrival in port, and behaved so obstreperously on |
l.o ird the Avenger that he was transfeired to the
in? Williams at Queeusclilf. and brought back to
Melbourne. The Commissioner of Customs has
ordered searching inquiries to be made into the
whole case, and if the man were abducted as
alleged, lie will prosecute the crimps.

buying any hotel, and took stepB to have any
cheques he mighthave given in connection with
the transaction dishonored. The plaintiff Mrs.
Baudewig sued him on the cheque, but tiie jury
found for def-ndant, and to-day Mr. Justice Hol
royd decided that the ever victorious Poppks
should be allowed his costs, as in his honor's
opinion the. action should nob have Deen brought
by Mrs. Baudewig, •
A week or two ago an action was tried in the
Supreme Court, and a verdict obtained for £100
against Messrs. Henry and Co., of the "South
Melbourne Citizen," for libel on Mr. Gray in
connection with the last Parliamentary election.
To day Wra. Henry and Benjamin C. Postill,
trading as Henry, and Co., filed their schedule,
giving as a cause the adverse verdict in the
(Supreme Court and disastrous land transactions.
The debts are set down at £1,118, and theassets
at £240.
Henry Smith was brought up to-day at the
City Court on a charge of vagrancy and re
manded, it being supposed that he is one of the
men who robbed a fellujonfi'er's clerk of. £175 a
fortnight ago.
Driver Holmes, who was dismissed after the
first inquiry, will bring evidence in support pf his
contention that the signals were not against him
when he entered Drouin station and ran into a

It is stated that a long-continued system of rail
way frauds has been discovered in connection with

shortly follow, None of the railway officials are
inculpated this time.
