THE HEATHER BELL AND SYLPH.
Tuf, pulling match between these boats came off
on Saturday last, and as was generally expected,
attracted a numerous assemblage to Macquarie
Point, from whence the boats started. Captain
Rees of the " Sir W F Williams," who had been
prevailed upon to act as umpire, effected a start
shortly after three o'clock, the Sylph taking the
lead by about a boat's length This, however, she
was unable to keep, at about the sixth stroke the
Heather Bell came up and give ing her the " go by"
kept the lead up to the first buoy boat, where the
Sylph's crew threw up their oars, one of them
having, as he stated, sprained his wrist. The
Heather Bell continued her course, completing the
ten miles in a few minutes over the hour, and that
too against a high cross sea, which frequently
compelled them to resort to bailing out the boat
with sponges. Upon returning the Heather Bell
was met with three hearty cheers from the lookers
on, many of whom had no inconsiderable sums at
stake upon the issue of the race. Captain Rees,
upon presenting the money, £20, which had been
pulled for, passed a well merited compliment upon
the Heather Bell, and her crew, and at the same
time expressed his regret that by the accident which
had befallen the Sylph, they had been deprived of
witnessing the amount of competition they had
expected
