MECHANICS' INSTITUTE.-Mr. F. Cane ex-
hibited llieoxy hydrogen microscope lastevming
for the benefit rf' the juvenile members of this
deserving insti'u'o Many of the objects »vero
particularly pleasing. We may instance the
various ferns and n>os»03. There was nn excel-
lent attendance, indeed the hall was filled to
overflowing. Wo got there at bit a modera'ety
late hour, but could get no further than the head
of the clairs. At the conclusion it was announced
that another exhibition of tho wonders of the mi
o oseope would tie mado on Tuesday next, v.h n
the German band would also attend, and play
throughout the evening. M*y we suggest to the
Committee the propriety of placing an officer or
two quite at the upper end of tho hall to prevent
the annoyance to which really respectable per-
sons are subjtctcd by a parcel of unruly hobble-
dehoys.
A HAITI VILLAGE.-Scorton is about the
happiest place in Lancashire; the reason being
that in this interesting spot there is neither pub-
lic house nor jei ry shop.
AN UNHAPPY VILLAGE -Staindrop is about
the plcnsantcst pi ice in the country of Durham ;
but'within a fortnight, two of its inhabitants,
Charles Jaikson and Thomas L"iinard, have been
killod whilst in a state of intoxication.
MAN HUNTING rxrRAOHDiNARY.-An un-
paralleled amount of excitement has been crea-
ted during the last month at Port Arthur by the
absconding of four men belonging to the Wood
Gang. It appears that these men wero employed
in the bush for several months, without being
placed under a special guard,-and that ono of
the number, being an old sliipwiight, devoted a
portion of his time, assisted by his fellow prison
or«, in building a canoe, which they provisioned,
and in which, it seems, they effected their escapo,
either to the mainland or to the gold regions, for
they have nev< r since been heard of. The con
vict imthoiities exhibited the most distressing
concern at the event, and employed every effort
that might lead to their recapture. As soon as
the prisoners were missed, no less than 120 con-
stables and others were actively ergaged ia
scouring the peninsular; this body of human
hunters appearing insufficient, 30 more were
added to the staff-besides which there is scarcely
an officer on the settlement who is not worked to
exhaustion by extra duties imposed upon them by
the absence of the constabulary. Olio night, it
was believed the bolters were discovered, and a
wary constable declared that he s'iot one of them,
that the wounded roan fell into a pool. Alarmed
at tho result, he ran a distance of nine miles to
acquaint the commandant, who at once despatched
a surgeon to the fatal spot ; but no body could be
found, and not a drop of blood was traceable in
any direction. This imaginary affair, however,
was soon succeeded by one of a serious character.
A prisoner who, on account_of his geographical
knowledge oí the Peninsula, was sent out in pur-
suit, but on passing through the thick scrub 20
'miles from the settlement, his pistol accidentally
discharged ita contents in his brea-t, and the poor
fellow's life is plaeed in great geopardy. The
Comptroller-General is now at Port Arthur con-
certing measures for preventing further abscond-
ing. The station is now a complete prison. Freo
and bond are subjected to a system of inspection
which renders existence there extremely un-
pleasant. A fresh importation has been received
fiom Norfolk Island; and we understand that a
number of them are to be forwarded to Hobart.
As wo are continually receiving communications
from the Peninsula from parties thoroughly ac-
quainted with the doings of the authorities, we
,, .. shall occasionally reproduce them for the edifica
nk \ lion ol the public

(late "Mr. Lipscombe's) in Murray-street.
? Arrangements are making for the accommoda-
tion of 300 to 400 guests on the occasion, and
Captain Fenton, M.L.C., has consented to
preside.
AN UNWELCOME INTRUDER-Yesterday, a
well-known knight of the shears named Owen
Moriarty, was placed at the police-office bar on
a charge of being on the premises of Mr. Seton,
of Liverpool street, for an unlawful purpose, at
ten o'clock on Wednesday night. The prosecutor
stated to the police magistrate that after his shop
was closed that night he heard a noise, and on
going out found Moriarty in the shop. On
seeing him, he made an excuse that he wanted a
piece of bread, but Mr. Seton was dissatisfied
with the " stall" (as he termed it) and gave him
into custody, being the more induced to do so,
by-perceiving that the accused was without his
shoes. He afterwards ascertained that Mr.
Jarvey, the pawnbroker, had been obliged to
turn the accused out of his premises, where he
had left his boots. The police magistrate said
he knew something of the man, who was rather
deficient in his upper works, and he committed
him for a month to the house of correction.

difficulty arising from tho refusal of ona of the

day Bracken, GrfQn, and M'Guire, were brought
up at the Police Court for further examination on
the charge of cruelly assaulting with a poker and
life preserver, E. M'Donald' at the " Old Pot,',
Bridgewater. The evidence of Mrs. Spriggs, and
Coustabeis Kemp aud Chapman, having been
taken, fully corroborating the former testimony,
, as to the nggr.naled nature of the Whitcboy ex-
ploits of the accused, the case was further re-
manded until Tuesday next, to alford an oppor-
tunity for the production of a witness for one of
tbe defendants.
TEA PARTY.-A charitnble tea party is an
nnuueed for Tuest'ay next, at St. Joseph's School
Room, in aid of the funds for the the lelicf of the
wives and children of the persons who fall in the
present war. The Vicar-General to preside. The
object commends itself so powerfully to the favor
of the aommunity, that in all probability St.
Joseph's School Room will want enlarging for the
accomodation of the numerous company likely to
be present on the occasion

THE ROB»KUY AT MR. MILWARD'S.-Yester-
day Thomas Moran and James Fulton appeared
before A. B. Jones, Esquire, Police Magistrate,
on the charge of being concerned in the recent
robbery at Air. Milwards, Patrick-street. Fulton
surrendered to his bail to meet the charge, but
Mr. Milward said he conscientiously believed he
he had no felonious participation in the
affair, and having sworn lo that effect, the
Police Magistrate at once released him from
custody. The charge against Moran, (formerly in
Mr. Milward's service), was then proceeded with.
This man, who is rather remarkable for an un-
prepossessing physiognomy, was charged in the
fir-t instance with stealing a fiutina, the property
of Mr. Milward, but that was withdrawn, and the
more serious one of burglary preferred. The
alleged offence was committed as stated in a
former issue, on Saturday night last, when pro-
secutor's premises were entered, and two chests
removed to the end of the garden, where the
contents-wearing apparel-were taken away. A
white shirt, found on his person when apprehended,
¡B positively identified by Mr. Milward, but the
remainder of the property has not yet been re-
covered. The prisoner stands remuuded until
Tuesday. _ .
