THE RICHMOND RACES.
On Wednesday last, the races commenced
on the new course, the property of Mr.
Cassidy, a few minutes walk from the
township, and the sports commenced with
every appearance of a continuance of fine
weather.
The Trial Stakes was won by Mr. H. Morrisby's
Farmer's Daughter, beating three others
which had not the slightest chance. This filly
is out of a sister of Pompey the mother of Hannibal,
and got by a half-bred cart horse.
The Town Plate was won by Mr. Blackwells
Modesty, beating five others easily ; but an excellent
race.
The Publicans' Purse was won by Mr.
Martin's Suckey Frizzle, beating four others in
grand style. This filly is out of a colonial bred
mare by Hannibal.
The Galloway Race was won by Mr. Gorham's
Billy-go-by-them ; but we are sorry to say
Billy died on the course in a few minutes after
winning-and not pressed in the race.
On Thursday, the second and last day,
the wind, and dust were nearly insupportable,
and- very few left Hobart Town.
The St. Ledger was won by Mr. R. Smith's
Brilliancy, by Hannibal, bearing two Little
John's easily ; a good race. The
Ladies' Plate was won by Mr. Kearney's
Mary Maud, by Snoozer. After the first heat
was run, a dispute arose as to the weights and
before Mr. Martin's mare could be saddled.
Mary Maud was started by one of the stewards,
although Mr. Martin's rider was mounting a
few yards from the post.
The Hurdle Race was won by Mr. William
Kearney, jun. Four horses started. From
the commencement they went away at a slashing
pace, and it appeared that neither of the riders
considered their lives worth a penny. At the
last leap (at the winning post there was not a
length between the two first horses.
The Beaten Horse Stakes was won by Dr.
Huish's Sir Peter, beating three others and a
good race it was.
The Hack Race was won by Mr. Morrisby's
Tommy. There was some dissatisfaction in
this race. At first three were brought to the
past and started and after running a heat of
two miles, it was said it was no start, when two
others were brought to the scratch and started,
which made five ; but they had no chance with
little Tommy, who won easily.
There were several accidents, but we have
not heard of any being fatal. The first day of
the Races, a Hack Race was got up, five horses
running, and a good race it was won by Mr.
G. Smith's Punch, one of the old breed of
horses.
The day after the races a match was run between
Mr. Martin's Tommy, and Mr. Guy's
Maid of the Mill, for £20, a single heat two
miles. This was a beautiful race, Tommy
winning by about half a neck.
