TRANSVAAL BUDGET'
AN ESTIMATd REVENUE OF'
L4,503,000.
in the Transvaal Legislature, on 14th
July, Mr Duncan. the Colonial Trea
surer, Introduced tl~e Budget for the
year'1903-1904.. The entire expenditure
for the civil administration of the
Transvaal -to .30th June, 1902; was pro
vided.from the local revenues, with the
exception of L541,000 met out of the.Im
perial grant-in-aid. The expenditure
included L181,000 interest on the debt of
the late Government and L407,000 for
public works.
For 1902-1903 the revenue from ordi
nary sources amounted to L4,602,000, in
cluding Customs, L2,180,000; posts and
telegraphs, L293;000; mining Ilcences,
L408,000; profits tax, L293,000; transfer
duty, L493,000; stamp duties, L275,000;
and native taxes and passes, L448,000.
The expenditure daring the same
period was L4,578,000, including South
African Constalbulary, L1,250,000; public
works, L969,000; education, L259,000;
posts and telegraphs, L315,000; and town
police, L285,000.
The estimated revenue for 1903-1904 Is
L4,500,000, including Customs, L1,800,000;
mining 'revenue and profits, L740,000;
posts, L360,000;" trade licences, L200,000;
natives, L00,000; transfer duty, IA50,000;
stamp duty, L250,000; and landed reve
nue and . miscellaneous. L200,000. The
estimated expenditure Is L3,590,000 The
balance of the revenue over the expen
diture will be required'as a contributibo
to the inter-Colonial Bddget.to meet the
Interest' bn the 'first instalment df the
