A QUARTER SESSIONS.
Monday, April 3.
Before Joseph Hone, Esq , Chairman, John
Kerr, and James Barnard, Esqrs.
This, the second general session of the pre-
sent year, opened with a small calendar, there
being only four cases for trial, two of which
were for trivial offences.
The Solicitor-General conducted the prose-
cutions,
The following was the jury impanelled :
Messrs Richard Cleburne (foreman;, J Peek,
J. Baker, H. Chapman, Jos Lester, David
Kelly. John Richardson, .1 Niblett, H Th in
son. W Roberts. T. Lightfoot, T. Mollor.
Charles Franks was charged with stealing
on the 25th of March, two door-keys of the
value of' 2s., the property of W. R. Townley.
He was acquitted.
Charlotte Mansfield, an old and constant
attendant at the Police-office, was charged with
stealing on the 24th of February a pair of
boots, the property of W. Potter.
This was one of those constantly occurring cases
in which the too prevalent vice of drunkenness
leads its victim to the commission of petty
theft, for the purpose of pampering to the
vicious propensity. The evidence was clear
and conclusive, and the wretched woman was
found guilty and sentenced to 12 months'
imprisonment, with hard labor, in her usual place
of residence, the Female House of Correction.
Patrick Gannon was charged with stealing
on the 1st of March a horse, of the value of
£13, the property of Mr. Firth, Jun., of
Sandy Bay.
The exertions of the police in tracing the
horse to the possession of the prisoner were
extremely praiseworthy, and the prisoner was
convicted upon the clearest evidence, and sen-
tenced to be transported for life.
Patrick Lindsey and Williim Frederick
Chapman were charged with stealing on the
11th of March four pigs, of the value'of £7,
the property of Mr.' Brookes, publican, of the
Old Wharf.
Mr. Brookes having lost his swine, gave
information to: the police, ,when Constable
Perkins of the detective force was, entrusted
with the discovery ,of the, thief' or thieve».

Lindsey found guilty* and sentenced to trans-
portation for seven years. < ¡
This oise closed the Ression, which was then
adjourned, as usual, to the second ensuing
Thursday, namely, the 13th instant, for the
hearing of appeals, &u. ; on this occasion the
attendance of the jurors is not required.
