BOXING.
MEIIEGAN BEATEN..
Melbourne, November 28
The lightweight boxing contest at the Stadium!
last, night between Hughie Mehegan, 9 st. 12 Ib.,
and Frank O'Connor, la st. 12 lb., never reached
an interesting stage. At the opening of the contest
O'Connor punished his opponent vigorously
with both hands to the face, rarely going for the'
body, except in clinches. Occasionally Mehegan
connected with his left. He opened the third'
round promisingly, secured a temporary advantage
with a vigorous onslaught with both hands. Any
miEjriv ings that O'Connor's supporters had were
dispelled after the third round; In the fifth
round The drove Mehegan back time after time
with perfectly judged blows. During the following
two rounds, the contest, swung more and more
into O'Connor's favor, and us Mehegan was pal-'
easily beaten, the towel was thrown in at the end
of the seventh round.
