'PLEASE TO

Bonfire Day on
Monday
(By P.T.)
©MALL boys with eager expressions,
small girls carefully making .each
halfpenny count, fathers looking rather
sheepish, and evidently hoping everyone
will know that the fireworks are not for
themselves, and mothers keeping a
watchful eye on the rash spendings of
their offspring ; such was the scene
which greeted me in every shop selling
fireworks today.
Witb Guy Fawkes day anniver
sary on Monday, the last few days
have been a time of pure delight for
the Pertli youngsters. The depres
sion doesn't seem to have affected
the sale of fireworks.
Tn fact, the children appear to have
more to spend on these traditional
amusements than when I flattened my.
stubby nose against the shop window,
wondering how I could make sixpence
buy all the crackers I wanted. Today
most of the children spend anything
from one to two shillings, while fathers
often spend as much as 10s.
AUSTRALIAN-MADE CRACKERS
Australian-made fireworks are coming
into their own. One shop in which the
boys and girls were standing two deep
had been stocked with 25 per cent. Aus
tralian fireworks.
Packets of crackers and halfpenny
bombs were still firm favorites, and the
children declined to be lured by the
tempting array of fancy things until
they had a good stock of the straight
out bangers. Throw-downs, too, were
well in favor.
A PARTICULAR YOUNGSTER
One young man was very particular
about his selection.
'How much are the Roman caudles?'
be inquired. ' ,; :-
'Sixpence,' was the reply.; ?
'How many double-bangers for 2d?' —
'Three.'
'What's in that box?. How much are
the crackers? . . Have you got any jump
ing jacks?' and so on, till he finally de
cided to buy a halfpenny box of squibs.
Masks for ''guys' were also much in
demand.
Sky rockets, mostly of British
make, were also included in the list ' :
of absolutely necessary fireworks.
Boys have been preparing bonfires ?
for days, and the threatening con
ditions today struck fear into many
a youngster's heart.
Only tomorrow, and then all the care
ful preparations will go up in .smoke,
and another twelve months will go by
before the cry of 'Penny for the guy !'
is heard again in the streets.
