OBITUARY.
THE LATE SIR W. T. LOTON.
The pioneers of this State are fast fall
ing by the -wayside, with the advance of
time, and it is possible that the next gener- ,
ation will see removed from the ranks of.
living souls those men of fortitude, hardi
hood, and courage who faced the rnknown
of this State in the early years, when Perth
was known as the Swan Eiver Settlement.
One whose name was undeniably associ
ated with early progress in the State was
Sir William Loton, whose remains were
laid at rest on Friday last. Sir William
during his early days in Western Australia
lived a vigorous life, and the result of his
forethought and effort is to be seen on all
sides to-day.
The funeral took place on Friday, the
service being held at St. George's Cathe
dral, after the body had lain in the me
morial chapel for two days. There was a
profusion of beautiful wreaths, expressive
of the deep sympathy felt for the mourn
ing relatives and in token of the ' kindly
esteem in which the deceased knight was
universally held.
The 90th Psalm was chanted, and, fol
lowing the reading of the lesson by Dean
Foster, Archbishop Biley delivered a pane
gyric. Sir William, he said, had been well
known in this Commonwealth for more
than 60 years, and his example should ? be
blazoned about the State and emulated, for
the deceased had come of sturdy stock,
with a determination to win through in
the battle of life. In the early days there
was little help to be secured, and initiative
and resource were a man's greatest gifts.
In every sphere of life Sir William had
been useful — as a citizen, as a member of
the Government, and as a philanthropist.
There were people who owed a great deal
to his kindness. As a member of the
church; both in the Cathedral council and
as a. diocesant officer, he had done as good
service as anyone else, for a ripe judgment
and a determination to do the best were
brought to all his works.
At the graveside the funeral service was
conducted by the Archbishop, assisted by
the Dean of Perth and the Archbishop's
chaplains, Minor Canon Patrick, Rev. C. L.
Riley, and Rev. L. W. Parry, the choir
singing appropriate hymns*
