Machine Which
'Thinks'
T ONDON, Fri — British sci
entists are working on a
new calculating machine which
'thinks for itself.'
Machine, it is hoped, will be
able not only to subtract, Mul
tiply and divide, but from in
structions previously put into
the machine will decide what it
should do in different circum
stances without outside help.
Experiments are being carried
out by the new Mathemat'cs Di
vision of the U.K. Department
of Scientific and Industrial Re
search.
Meanwhile, calculating ma
chines already in use at the
D.S.I.R. laboratories have shown
spectacular results.
One Government department
. began to work out figures for
an urgent, complicated pro
blem.
It was then calculated that it
would take nearly 300 years to
complete the table.
D.SI.R. completed the tables
for them in 50 hours — with
every figure checked and cross
checked.
