THE MILK INDUSTRY
HOPES OF MINISTER FOR
HEALTH.
SYDNEY, Monday.
The Minister for Health (Mr
Kelly) hopes to be able to pre-<*>
sent to the next session of Par-<*>
liament, commencing in
ary, amendments to the Milk Act
and to announce reorganisation
of the industry.
He stated to-day that a Cabinet
sub-committee would meet at a cau j
cus meeting this week, and it is .hop
ed they will present an early report
to the Cabinet.
Mr Kelly emphasised that an in
crease in the price of milk to the
consumer will not be made, and no
monopoly will be given to any com
pany for the distribution or pasteuri
sation of milk. Means, however,
will be found,' to reduce the gap be
tween the production and distribu
tion of milk.
Most of the members of the Go
vernment, it is understood, favour
the abolition of the Milk Board and
the handing over of authority to con
trol the industry to a body which
would be answerable to Parliament.
GOVERNMENT ATTACKED.
Mr R. N. Beale, M.L.A., stated to
day that the dairy farmers had been
let down badly. They were oeing
forced off their holdings while the
Government put off dealing with the
position. He said the Government
so far had only played with the po
sition.
Jvlr Beale was critical of the action
of the Federal Minister for Com
merce (Mr Scully), who said last
week he could not agree to represen
tations that the dairy farmers should
gett a rise in the price of milk of lid
instead of Id. Mi- Scully, he de
clared, probably had never consider
ed the matter for one minute. He
seemed to have been advised by civil
servants.
