FREMANTLE OH HOLIDAY
Lumpers' Annual Outing
OTHERS TAKE A DAY OFF
The waterfront at Fremantle was de
serted to-day, on account of the annual
picnic of the Fremantle Lumpers' Union,
which was held at South Perth. Eegin
ning at 9 o'clock, the river steamers
Zephyr and Emerald and Tilly's launches
conveyed about two thousand lumpars,
their wives, children, sisters, cousins, and
aunts to the rendezvous, where a sports
programme and picnic luncheon filled in
a happy day.
With no cargo handling on the
wharves, others found it convenient also
to get out of doors. The clerical staff
of the Harbor Trust had a day off, and
ths Trust's tender Ivanhoe conveyed
them to a picnic at Rockingham. The
carters and drivers, most of whose work
is dependent on the activities of the
lumpers, also organised a picnic for the
day.
