Personal.
Colonel F. H. Howland, V.D ..cele
brated his 74th birthday today. Born
at Bayswater, London, ,in 1863, arid
educated in London and at Trinidad,
in the West Indies, he arrived in Mt.
Gambier 54 years ago, and his been
one of the town's most public spirited
citizens. He had a distinguished
military career, and since the Great
War has been the life and soul of tha
Mt. Gambier Sub-bronch of the R.S. &
S.I.L.A., of which he is secretary.
Dr. G. N. Lorimer left for Mel
bourne to-day to attend the funeral of
his mother, who died in St. Andrew's
Hospital.
Mr. Morton Wright, of the Metro
politan Fire Brigade, Melbourne, is
I spending his annual leave at Mount
[Gambier. Another old Mount Gam
bier boy, Mr. Bob Shepherdson, was
recently successful in joining the Bri
gade. He is the eldest son of the
Town Clerk (Mr. Arthur Shepherd
son), and is a well known cricketer.
Mr. Noel Friedrichs left by Satur
day morning's train for Lobethal,
where he has been appointed assistant
teacher at the Higher Primary School.
Geraldine and Vivienne Allen, of
Caulfield, Melbourne, who have spent
the school vacation with their aunt,
Mrs. Stan Boothey, have now returned
home. Mr. and Mrs. Boothey motored
the girls back to Melbourne during
the week-end.
Mr. and Mrs. M. Cooling, accom
panied by Zena and Mrs. Jacquelin,
spent the week-end in Bairnsdale.
returning on Monday night.
Messrs. W. Chesterfield, C. E. Gladi
gau, L. Parry, S. Pearson, and D.
Manser, of the "Watch" printing staff,
motored to Adelaide on Sunday and
were present at yesterday's Test
match. The party returned this morn
ing.
Miss R. Norman left for Melbourne
by the air mail service this morciag,
