SOUTH-EASTERN DAIRYIN^
PLEASINGiPROSPECTS.
The Assistant Dairy Exxpert of the
State (Mr. H. J.. Apps) returned to
Adelaide on Thursday froin. a fort
night's tour of the dairying districts
iii the South-East.. : He: addressed a
number of me%tihgs of dairymen in
regard to feeding, breeding, and weed
irg, and waa also able to assist indi
vidual dairymen in regard ~ to many
problems that confront them.
Referring to his tour on Friday, Mr.
Aj-ps said the South-East had excel
lent dairy prospects, but is always at
the mercy of a dry summer and aut
umn. "The outjput at present," he
added, " is at its lowest level, and
pi ices are_at the pinnacle. The South
Ea stern farmers must realise the ne
cessity of conserving their fodder,
which grows abundantly in the spring
and early summer. If that were done,
the lactation period would be greatly
extended, and the dairy farmers would
benefit by the high prices. Whether
it be five years of fifty, the silo must
come. It I3 the one thing necessary, to
put the industry on a sound basis.
Suitable crops can bo grown for the
purpose, and their value by conserva
tion would be greatly enhanced when
used in the dry autumn. Further, the
more liberal feeding would enable the
stock to winter well, and enter on the
new season in good physical form,
which always counts so much in milk
and butter-fat production. That is the
one lesson the dairy farmers must
learn-the growing and conservation
0 * good fodder for late season use."
Mr. Apps stated that the meetings he
addressed were well attended, and
those engaged in the production of
dairy produce are interested in latest
developments in the industry. Some of
the herds in the South-East are well
b;ed, and managed, and their owners
are progressive in their methods.
