COONAWARRA
The annual moeung of indoor carpet bowls
club elected: — President. R. J. Childs: secre
tary. H. W. Redman: scorer. P. J. Lang: com
mittee. P. C. Stafford. R. Redman. W. W.
Pounsett. and officers. — Convened by W. Snell
iiib and W. W. Pounsett, a public meeting was
held in the hall to discuss the formation of a
Comforts Fund unit. Although the unit is to
be run in conjunction with the Penola unit.
il is understood that it v.ill receive individual
credit for its efforts. It was decided to form
a women's committee to run entertainments
to raise funds. The committee is- — Presi-
dent. Mrs. W. Clayfleld: vice-president. Mrs.
R. J. Skinner: secretary. Mrs. W. W. Poun
sett; committee, Mesdames R. J. Childs. w.
Collins, o. C. Ey. F. Eamprod. H. W. Redman.
X*. E. Teichelmann. All members and those
who assist, will pay admission to any enter
tainment at which tliey are present.
CRYSTAL BROOK
A packing evening was held. A parcel of
80 garments for refugee children was sent to
the Red Cross. A parcel was sent to Comforts
Fund.— A sale of buttons by members of the
girls' club for the Children's Hospital collected
£8 2/6.
CLARE
At the annual meeting of the coursing club
It was decided to run a 32-dog stake on July
3 and 4. in aid of the local branch of the
Comforts Fund. Officers elected; — Patrons.

Dux. — Members who will retire from the hos
pital board are Messrs. P. H. Quirke. J. w.
Ohimeyer. and G. Bails.— Table tennis. —

to 4 rubbers 10 sets. Sevenhills d. Blyth,
13 rubbers 26 sets to 2 rubbers 8 sets. — Mr.
R. P. James, the State secretary of the Meat
Industry Employes' Union, visited here last
week, and a branch of the union was formed
by the men employed at Clare and Auburn.
COROMANDEL VALLEY
Empire Day was celebrated at the school
in the presence of a large gathering of parents
and friends. The chairman of the com
mittee - Mr. J. B. B. Driscolll presided. After
saluting the flag buns and sweets were dis
tributed to the children.
MAITLAND
At the Congregational Church, the induction
of the Rev. M. R. F. Maddern as minister in
charge of the Maitland district Congregational
churches took place. The Induction ministers
were the Revs. H. S. Grimwade. G. L Lockley.
and E. B. Leaver. After the service a wel
come social was held in the hall.
MOONTA
A social, arranged by the Girl Guides, raised
£10 10/. The money will be forwarded to the
British Girl Guide headquarters as Moonta'*
donation towards the purchase of two air am
bulances and a motor boat. — At a meeting con
vened by the Mayor (Dr. A. R. Clayton) a
committee was formed to promote the sale of
war savings certificates. Arrangements were
made to canvass the town and district. — Em-
pire Day was celebrated at schools, and the
Union Jack was flown from many buildings.
MILLICENT
An old resident of the Millicent district.
Mrs. Elizabeth Major, relict of Mr. Denis Ma
jor, died on Monday. She was in her 93rd
year, and had been bedridden for 23 years.
She was born at Paris Creek, near the Mea
uu»», in uv«. ana went to we oouul'&BSt in
the steamer Penola in 1862. She knew Adam
Lindsay Gordon, and remembered him as a
member of Parliament for the Victoria As
sembly district in 1865-66. Mrs. Major took
an intelligent Interest in matters affecting the
social and public life of the district.
PENOLA
At the town golf club's opening the presi
dent. Mr. W. Clayfleld. said that every effort
would be made to raise money for the Red
Cross and Comforts Fund. A mixed foursome
was won by Miss T. Kidman and Mr. G. Skip
per. The annual meeting of the club elected:

annual dinner of the South-Eastern section of
the Prince Alfred Old Collegians' Association
a representative gathering was present from
Mount Gambier. Millicent, Naracoorte. Bin
num. and Macarihur (Victoria).
RYE
Concern is felt by the absence of rain. Only
a few points have fallen, and they have done
very little good. — Feed is scarce, and stock are
being hand fed. — Seeding is being held up
until a soaking rain comes. — Rabbits are still
numerous, and many excellent catches are
reported.
