Dispute Over Selection Of
Candidates
NARRACOORTE, October 31.
A meeting of the Victoria District
Committee of the Liberal Federation
was held at Narracoorte on Friday to
?wind up its financial affairs before
handing over to the new district com
mittee that will be formed under the
merger between the Liberal Federation
and the Country Party. The com
mittee has contracted a debt in the
form of a bank overdraft of over
£200, guaranteed by several members
of the district committee. At the.
meeting on Friday a number of dele
gates wanted to know what part the
Country Party district organisation was
going to play in the liability.
A resolution had been carried in
favor of the joint committee selecting
the candidates for the next election,
instead of taking a plebiscite of mem
bers of the league, and that two can
didates be run — one from the Country
Party and the other from the Liberal
Federation, and that nominations be
called for candidates in this form.
At the meeting of the district com
mittee on. Friday, prominent mem
bers said that if the decisions of the
joint committee were carried into
effect they would resign from the
league and assist in constituting a
body with Liberal principles that
would run independent candidates
There was a representative number of
delegates from all the branches of the
old Liberal Federation at the meet
ing. The following motion was car
ried at the instance of Mr. J. W. Wil
liams (MBlicent), seconded by Mr. N.
V. Wallace (Nerracoorte) : — 'That this
meeting is of opinion that the reso
lutions passed at the meeting of the
joint committee of -the Literal and
Country League are not in the best in
terests of the party, and recommends
to our delegates that at the next meet
ing they move for the rescission of such
resolutions.'
