11HE INQUEST ON THE FIRE
. IN KING WILLIAM-STBEET.
TO THE EDITOH.
Sir— A short time before the conclusion of the
above inquest I had to leave on business, and
en returning was informed the verdict; was 'the
shop was eet on fire maliciously,' althou A in
the absence of the slightest particle of evidence
in support of such a conclusion ; bat what as
tauished me most was the rider attached — that
my evidence was unsatisfactory and evasive!
Id answer to th-s, I beg to say I went to the in
quest with the full intention and desire to find
out if possible the cause of the fire, and gave
my evidence accordingly ; but I was so takeu by
surprise at each of the jurymen crossquestion
ing me about my private business that I hardly
knew whether to answer or not, especially as
many of the questions were In no way oounected
with the subject In hand. At that time I bad
not the remotest ides, that the object In view
was to endeavor to fix suspicion on myself or
anybody ; bi-t. considering the questions were
inurely put to satisfy orivate cariosity, I was
naturally slightly indignant. Hence the
^?11111^11^ rider. Added to the above, I was a
little confused, not having recovered from the
severe excitement caused by suddenly seeing
my shop in flames.
I em, Sir, ftc,
ARTHUR BSAK.

\ J TO TOE EDnoB.
Sir— At the meeting ia G^wler Ward on Mon
day evening Mr. SAMUEL RAPHAEL Ba-d
that he could amuse the Electors for half an
hour by describing my career in Sidney.
As Mr. Raphael has a very live y imagination,
and does not scruple to use it, I have no doubt
that he could fulfil bis promise, bnt with what
amount of truth may be easily gnessed when I
state that I NEVER IN MY LIFE WAS IV
SVDNEY OR Iff ANY PAKT OF NEW
soura wales.
Mr. Raphaels assertion was therefore in fact
either a gross mistake or a lie ; but notwith
standing its complete untruthfulness I should
not have taken the trouble to notice it, had I not
found from the nominations this day that Mr.
Raphael Is believed in by people who ought to
know better — I refer to the Hon. John Mor
phett, Sir James Fisher, aid Mr. Isblster.
When such gentlemen as these give Mr. Raphael
the support of their names it is fair to assume
that faith in him is more widely spread than I
suspecUd, and I therefore think it desirable to
give bis assertion this fiat contradiction.
Yours obediently',
A. SIDNEY CLAEK.

TO THE ELECTORS.
To guard against fledge-b eakera. I wish to
make a few statements, to prevent one front
nding on our shoulders, to honor or office as
Mayor of Adelaide, in the person of Mr. Coglin,
now candidate for the Mayoralty of Adelaide.
I wish to etate that Mr. Coglin was aware,
and if you ere rot, I beg to etite that many a
noble child and beloved wife are undergoing
hardships and privations in consequence of their
fathers »nd husbands being incarcerated in the
cause of Irish liberty.
Mr. Coglin was waited on by five respectable
citisens at different times. He promised a. sub.
Rcription en two occasions, and to cttend meet
ings and speak thereat in tavorof tbe move
meat, but as often broke his pledge, once under
the pretence of something said by a gentleman,
end next under some other paltry excuse.
WiU tbe men of Limerick, Clare, Tipperary.
or any other part of Old Ireland, vote for such
a man as that, while the f .milies of our incar
cerated countrymen pine in hunger and want in
many of the cities and byways of the land of
their birth, while turn from the protection and
support of their uatural protectors *
Show by your vote, now that you have the
opportunity of voting for one that has always
been a good employer, and as far as in h-a
power lay, forwarded your interests. Mr. Fuller
is th«t man, and not Mr. Corlin, who would
wound the feelings of the State prisoners and
their friends rather than give sixpence towards
alleviating the distress of their families.

PS. — Tii true Mr. Coglin came forward and
offered at the eleventh hour a p ltry subscrip

intended aa an electioneeriug trick. Electors
