THE MATTER BEFORE THE
PEEMIEE.
SIR JOHN FORREST'S REPLY.
The resolutions passed by the
Chamber of Commerce of Fremantle re
garding the recent fire have been for
warded to the Premier (Sir John Forrest,
M.L.A.) Sir John has replied stating
that the suggestions contained in them
viz, — that the Government should pro
vide .£400 towards the cost of a steam
Fire Engine; that the 'construction
of a reservoir on Monument Hill should
be undertaken without further delay ;
that the Government should adopt every
precautionary measure against fire in
Fremanrle by erecting Btandpipea, , &c.,
rind more particularly alarms in
positions where watchmen could give
prompt alarm and have ready access to
buildings, and that the Government
should also have the platform of the
new transit sheds made of solid material
and built on the most approved
principle, were under consideration.
The Government have nominated
Messrs. Thomas Fowler and Frank Reed
for the positions of Inspectors of Mines,
under the Mines Regulations tor theCool
gardie and neighboring Goldfields
and the Murehison Goldfields respec
tively. Both gasrtlemen are eminently
qualified for the positions, Mr. Fowler's
credentials being excellent, while Mr.
Reeds's name is well known by his con
nection with the Public Works Depart
ment. He has passed first in the first
class at the examination for ' compet
ency as a mine manager in London and
is well up in the subject altogether.
