Sydney. 2nd Serjtemhnr.
At a recent meeting of the several steam
companies, a comuuication was received
from the Colonial Secretary expressing a
wish tliatthey would combine to welcome
Prince Alfred. It was thereupon deter
mined to carry out the wish of the Gov
ermnent. Arrangements are accordingly
in progress, and the fleet, consisting of
between thirty and forty vessels, will pro
ceed round the coast to meet the Galatea,
and tneir combined passenger accommo
dation will admit of several thousand
persons joining in the demonstration of
welcome out at sea.
At an early hour to-day it was announc
ed at Tattersall's that all Mr. Fisher's
horses entered for tho present spring
meeting :it Radwick had been scratched
for all their engagements. This was only
what might be expected. Token was
scratched for his work on Saturday, Sea
gull broke down, aud Little Fish showed
by his running that he was not fit ; aud
the only tiling left was to scratch, them
all. In addition to these, Mr. Eale's
Old England and Mr. Cobcroft's Volun
teer have been scratched for their engage
ments.
Kelpie tho raoo horse has been sold for
320 guineas.
A Chinaman and woman named John
son, have been arrested for the murder of
.a child, the body of which was found in
Cleveland paddock. They were after
wards discharged, on proving that the
child found was uot theirs.
The police are busily engaged in ridding
tho streets of juvenile prostitutes, Num
bers of them were brought before the
Court to day, and ordered to the Indus
trial Schools.
Sept 3.
A meeting of merchants will take place
to-morrow, (Wednesday), to oppose the
continuance of the ad valorem, duties after
the act expires at the end of the present
year.
The Assembly is now debating a
motion censuring the Government for
suspending a portion of the Stamp Act.
The judges have decided that Mrs.
Dickson's death stops the case of Dickson
v. Yeomans.
Green has published a letter, and a
medical certificate, stating that he was
drugged before the late race, and he offers
a reward of jfilOO for the discovery of
the perpetrators of this shocking offence,
Token and Little Fish are scratched for
all their Randwick engagements.
There are twenty-six entries for the
Pigeon Derby.
Sept. .4
The Government intend to give pen
sions to the families of the pilots who
were lately drowned at the Heads, and a
gratuity to Airs Green.
The Federal Council Bill haa passed
the Assembly.
At a large meeting of merchants to-day,
resolutions were adopted declaring that
''ad valorem' duties were injuring the
trade of the port.
The railway loan debate has been ad
journed.
Hill won the pigeon championship,
Johustone was second, and Donahue
third.
Sept. 5.
1 Ue Government have received uifor
mation by the Panama mail that the
Bertrand appeal case has been argued
before the Judical Committee of the
Privy Couucil. The arguments lasted
over the greater part of two days. Their
Lordships reserved judgment The court
consisted of the Lord Chief Baron of the
Exchequer, with Sir Fitzroy Kelly, Sir
Wru. Krle, Sir John Taylor Coleridge,
Sir Edward Vaughan Williams, Sir Uich.

Sir Fitzroy Kelly, in the course of the
proceedings, intimated his opinion that
no new trial could be granted iu cases of
felony. If, therefore, their Lordships
should be of that opinion, the appeal of
the Government will be allowed, and the
conviction of Berlrand will stand good.
The fact, however, of the full court here
having decided that certain evidence was
improperly sent to the jury, will doubt
less have an influence on the action of
the Executive.
We omitted to state in our Panama
summary yesterday, in reference to the
suspension of Capt. Machin, that his
certificate was suspended subject to the
sanction and confirmation of the Go
vernor, aud that Capt. Thomas late of the
hulk European, had been placed in com
mand of the Kaikoura on her voyage to
Sydney, where a successor to Uapt.
Machin would probably take charge of
her prior to her next voyage.
In the case of Hogan v. Curtis, the old
disputed case of the Fool and Sir Wm.
Don, in which the plaintiff, the owner of
the Fool, sued for the amount cf stakes
paid over to the ownei of Sir Wm. Don,
in the great trotting match which took
place some months back, the Supreme
Court, to-day, held that the contract was
a legal oue, and the plaintiff could not
therefore recover.
