The Sugar Cane Crop in JBongul. I
THU enormous sugar cano crops of Hiu
doostan and the enormous production of
sugar there ordinarily excite hut little
attention in the outside world. This
doubtless arises from tho fact that the
Hiudoostauoo long since learned tho high
food valuo of sugar and kept thoir sugar
for their own homo consumption, it rarely
over getting into the outsido markets of
tho world, excopting at times of sugar
famine.
Our Calcutta correspondent has recently
favored us with some data as to tho mea
planted in sugar cane and tho condition of
the crop in Bengal this season. The
Government officers report S94,i200 acres
in sugar cane ns compared with SUÜ,O0l»
last year. Collating tho returns from the
various sugar districts tho out-turn of tho
sugarcane crop this year in Bengal fe
estimated nt 90 per cont of a normal crop,
as against a production of S4 per cont last
year.
"Wo aro now rating J ava as tho largest
cane sugar produomg country in the
world, based upon tho fact that Jt exports
more cane sugar than any other country.
Wo boro find that Bengal is cultivating
four times the aroa that wo aro cultivating
in Louisiana, and will probably make a
million and a quarter tons of sugar, about
doubling tho crop of Java, but wisoly
keeping tho sugar at home for their owu
use.-" Louisiana Planter."
