DONASTER MAY WIN AT
WILLIAMSTOWN
Stays Well, And Can Cany
Weight
MAHOGANY SHOULD ACCOUNT FOR
SPRINTERS
MELBOURNE, Sunday.
Donaster ls a sound stayer, and although he has a lot of weight, he should
win the Australia Day Cup at Williamstown to-morrow.
In the Bagot Handicap at Flemington and the Anniversary Handicap at
Caulfield, Donaster was, in racing parlance, ridden "upside down," being In
front a long way from home. The chestnut has always run his best when
raced behind the pacemakers.
Buralong and El Bruno probably will prove to be Donaster's most danger
ous opponents.
In the A.N.A. Handicap, for which there are 16 acceptors, Mahogany, who
was lucky at the start when he dead-heated with Magic Circle for the Eclipse
Stakes at Ascot, will be hard to beat.
Other likely winners are Riviera, Bankshaw and Haikara.
El Bruno won like a really good hors
at Caulfield. He has 7.10 to-morrow, an
actually meets Donaster and Buznlon
on 8 lb. worse tcrmB than at Caul
field.
Buznlong had every chance in th
straight at Caulfield had he been ROU
enough. His finishing effort was rathe
weak, and unlike a Caulfield Cup win
ncr.
Beaustone was not; impressive a
Caulfield, but probably he was not suit
ed by thc slow pace, and he may do bet
ter. Malo o' Aline ran a good race ii
tho Anniversary Handicap, and lookci
like a winner until El Bruno cam
along and cut him out.
Tho only other runner that appeals i
Barometric. He won a mile and a quar
ter handicap all the way at Ascot at hi
last start, after running last at his pre
vious effort.
Hard to Beat
Mahogany was lucky at the start
when ho dead-heated with Magic
Circle in the Eclipse Stakes at
Ascot, but he shewed a (ot of pace
and will be hard to beat in the
A.N.A. Handicap.
Magic Circle proved that Mahogany'
form waa fairly good, ns, with increase!
weight, she went to Woodend and wot
well. Should Magic Circle start to-mor
row she will have 7.3, and will thui
meet Mahogany on 4 lb. worse terms
Figures thus point to Mahogany beat
ing her and ending her sequence of winn
which now, including a dead-heat, num
ber four. Kanuri is also reported to b;
a doubtful Btnrter,
Plymouth Hoe ran well in th« Too
ronga Handicap at Caulfield, but mn;
do better over a longer journey. Bar
ham ran better than generally expectet
in the race won by Kanuri at Caul
field.
As Sweti'cnham is considered to bc ai
unlikely starter. Masterton may win thi
Maiden Plate. He has won over hurdles
and although he was unplaced on tlx
flat at Caulfield recently, should do bet
ter to-morrow. LanaruB has taken si
while to reveal his early promise, and k
another who may appreciate the cxtn
distance.
May Gain Third Win
' Bankshaw was rather impressive
. when ho won at Moonee Valley
early in the present month. This
win followed on his success in a
Three-Year-Old Handicap at Mon
tons. To-morrow he will attempt
to complete the hat-trick-and his
chance looks excellent-in tho
Anniversary Handicap, even though
he has topweight of 8.7.
Grand Hotel, who cantered home at
tho head of a Maiden Handicap field
at Woodend on Thursday, ia a post
bility. Gay Dell has been rather dis
appointing since he was third in the
Oaks, and Bureaucrat was never sight
ed in the Rowena Welter. Darno Swift
finished well to run second to Montara
in the second division of the Koaka
riljb Trial, and is a wonderful galloper,
and BO is Sylphide.
Haikara's Chance
BTaikara is a novice at hurdling, but
tho way in which, he shaped at his last
attempt at Ascot a couple of weeks ag^o
indicated that he would not be long in
winning. He may succeed in the Laver
ton Trial Hurdle.
Exmoor is a doubtful starter, but
should he start: will have a chance in
this field. Stylist has won over the bat
tens at Williamstown, and Bclco won
on thc flat at Woodend.
Trained on the course by R. Sinclair,
Riviera, who shaped fairly well in her
early spring races, seems likely to win
ber first race in the Foundation Han
dlea], ennismore, Snow White and
King Arthur are regarded as unlikely
starters. Free Leg has done little racing,
but is a smart galloper.
